Abstract

This study aims to explain how the essence of zakat as an instrument of social justice can be expanded to become an instrument of sustainable social-ecological transformation by combining Islamic teachings' spiritual, social, and economic strengths. This study uses the library research method as the primary approach to explore concepts, theories, and practices related to zakat and environmental preservation, with the analysis used as disintegrative and connective. The results state that zakat, as a Sharia-based Islamic financial instrument, has transformative potential to address global challenges related to environmental conservation by expanding its functions beyond traditional social assistance. With a progressive reinterpretation of zakat's asnaf, such as fi sabilillah, ecological conservation can be integrated as a moral and spiritual obligation that is aligned with the maqasid of sharia, including the protection of life, property, and the sustainability of future generations. Through strategic programs such as reforestation, energy conservation, waste management, and environmental education, zakat can have a tangible impact on ecological balance while improving the welfare of low-income people. This approach must be supported by theological legitimacy from the ulama, clear impact indicators, and cross-sector collaboration that utilizes technology for transparency and effectiveness. With a sustainable strategy, zakat can go beyond its role as a religious obligation and become a catalyst for global change, inspiring a more just, inclusive, and sustainable civilization.
